Phyllis Wheatley YWCA, 901 Rhode Island Avenue, NW - 1950: From the Wymer Photograph Collection, The Historical Society of Washington, DC/City Museum

DID YOU KNOW?
In 1893, all wiring in the city was required to be underground. This gave rise to the storage battery cars provided by the Brightwood Railway Company of DC. This line was 7th Street extended, from Boundary Street to the District line on 7th and Brightwood Avenue, later known as Georgia Avenue. Maximum fare was 5 cents/passenger or 6 tickets for 25 cents. On the city streets, at that time, could be seen horse-drawn car omnibuses, cable and electric cars. The last of horse-drawn car operation was 1898.

SMS is a non-profit, community-based, volunteer-driven organization that relies heavily on the time, talent, and treasures of volunteers in the community as well as beyond. Volunteers are neighborhood residents, business and property owners, leaders or members of stakeholder organizations, or other persons who support the organization’s mission and are willing to devote their time and energy to support the community’s growth and improvement.

Volunteers are the life-blood of the Shaw Main Streets program. The work of volunteers helps to make Shaw an even more attractive and exciting place. It is important that all interested sectors and stakeholders get deeply involved in the function of the organization and share in its successes. And in getting involved we must also recognize that this often involves change – change in the way we see things; change in the way we do things. To further engage active and potential volunteers in the work of the SMS organization, we have planned a series of community dialogues.

Volunteers commit to at least one year of service and usually work 3-5 hours per month outside of committee meetings and attend training sessions to learn about the Main Street Approach to neighborhood business revitalization. SMS volunteers take responsibility for carrying out program projects.

To volunteer, contact Executive Director Alexander M. Padro at 202-265-SHAW or ampadro@shawmainstreets.com.
