Shaw Green Team Initiative

Green team

Shaw Main Streets’ over-arching goal is to help build sustainable, self-sufficient business districts within the Shaw “village” where residents and visitors can find everything they might need within this vibrant, walkable community. Shaw Main Streets has conducted several kinds of public consultation processes with Shaw revitalization stakeholders to clearly articulate the community’s vision for the 7th and 9th Street commercial corridor. In every instance, one of the most important issues identified by the community is to achieve and maintain “clean and safe” streets in the commercial corridor.

This was a resounding call by the community for Shaw Main Streets to become a partner in the Green Team Program pioneered by the former 14th and U Main Street Initiative. In expanding the Green Team concept to the 7th and 9th Street commercial corridors, Shaw Main Streets engaged other non-profit organizations in Shaw, such as Bread for the City and the United Planning Organization, to recruit prospective Green Team employees from among the unemployed and homeless clients they serve.

The Shaw Green Team began its work on October 6, 2006, following training of team members in planting and maintaining trees and tree boxes, customer service and life skills, and other topics.  The Green Team program is funded during its first year by the Neighborhood Investment fund, overseen by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.  The program is administered by the Columbia Heights/Shaw Family Support Collaborative.

The Green Team in Shaw will focus on:

  • Strengthening individuals in the community by providing opportunities for our formerly homeless, unemployed, and underemployed populations through employment, training and learning life skills.
  • Sustaining healthy neighborhoods by promoting street maintenance and beautification by removing litter from streets and sidewalks, removing graffiti, and providing tree box landscaping and maintenance in Shaw’s four historic districts.
  • Stimulating and protecting private and public investment in the revitalization of long vacant properties by providing a well maintained and properly kept commercial district.
  • Ensuring visitor and resident comfort and safety that supports tourism, while disseminating heritage and hospitality information about the neighborhood and its attractions.
