DID YOU KNOW?
Efficient public transport was a hallmark of the nation’s capital for decades. Washington had one of the outstanding streetcar systems in the 1920’s through the 1950’s. These modern electric cars provided frequent service to all parts of the city.

 

 

Board of Directors

The Shaw Main Streets, Inc. Board of Directors has final accountability for the success of the Shaw Main Streets (SMS) program, and as such is responsible for establishing program policy, providing legal oversight, determining program goals, and approving the annual operating budget. Board members (a) raise funds for the organization, (b) work actively on business district revitalization, (c) provide leadership to the organization’s other volunteer members, and (d) promote the Main Street program widely in the community and District.

The Board is made up of 11 members. The term of each board position is two years. During their term of office each member is expected to lend his/her special expertise to the program through service as an officer or as the Chairperson of a Committee or Subcommittee for at least one year. The officers of the board are the Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Shaw Main Streets Board Member Selection

The Directors of Shaw Main Streets, Inc. are elected at the annual meeting of the Members by such Members as have the right to vote on such election. Members are those persons who have attended at least one public meeting of the Corporation in the twelve (12) months preceding the Annual Meeting, as reflected in the Corporation’s records, or have served on, and attended at least two meetings of, one or more of the Corporation’s Standing Committees in the twelve (12) months preceding the Annual Meeting. Attendance at Standing Committee meetings must be verified by the records of the Corporation, the records of at least one of the Standing Committees, or the Chair of at least one of the Standing Committees. Nominations to the Board of Directors shall be made by the Nominations Committee and shall be set forth in the notice of the annual meeting. Candidacy for the Board of Directors as unpaid volunteers of the corporation is open to everyone in the community, including, but not limited to, members of Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, civic associations, faith-based and other community organizations, business and property owners and residents. Directors cannot serve more than two consecutive two-year terms in office.
