Shaw Businesses in the Spotlight:

New Businesses on 7th and 9th Streets, NW

A new casual and takeout dining option joined the many restaurants on the 1900 block of 9th Street, NW, in April 2005, and it’s a first for Shaw.  Dan the Man’s Teriyaki at 1936 9th Street, NW, offers a variety of Japanese and Korean specialties, including chicken, beef, and pork teriyaki prepared with regular and spicy sauces made on the premises and char broiled as ordered. House-made beef Japanese gyoza dumplings and soba noodles with chicken, beef, shrimp, and sausage in a special house sauce are other specialties.  Also available are three hot sub sandwiches, 16 cold subs, including a vegetarian sandwich, and nine other sandwiches, along with soft drink sand snacks.  The highest price item on the menu costs $6.99. Proprietor Daniel Jung welcomes patrons to dine in, take out, or call for free delivery for orders over $10.00. For more information, call 202-797-0090.

Wagtime, a well-known pet spa on the 1400 block of Q Street, NW, is expanding to a second location at 1232 9th Street, NW. The new location, which offers cage-free boarding, separate rooms for small and larger dogs, an outdoor exercise area, and an expanded boutique featuring products for, by, and about dogs and cats, opened in June. Pets can be viewed on a webcam while their owners are at work or traveling. Owners Lisa Schreiber and Ofer Khal look forward to making new friends (dogs and cats and their humans) in central Shaw at an upcoming Shaw Main Streets Night event.  In the meantime, stop by, or for more information, call 202-234-8825/6, or visit www.wagtimepetspa.com.

At the 185-seat restaurant, Executive Chef Jeff Tunks will combine fresh seasonal ingredients with cooking techniques borrowed from the Lafourche-Teche region of Louisiana (stretching from Baton Rouge west to Opelousas), to create unique dishes served in a casual, modern setting, with American, French and African wines. For more information, call Passion Food Hospitality at 202-393-1510 or visit www.acadianafishhouse.com.

William Lewis, owner of Beverages, Etc., which opened at 1905 9th Street, NW, in March, believes he offers the best crab cakes south of Baltimore, and the best fish sandwiches in DC.  The Friday Seafood Special offers a seafood combination, two sides, and bread for $10.95. The staff is also very proud of their barbequed chicken and wings.  And as their name implies, Beverages, Etc. offers a variety of beers, wines, juices, and soft drinks. Free delivery is available for orders over $25.00. Orders can be faxed to 202-387-2914.  For more information, call 202-387-2913.

The latest addition to the Shaw club scene is Avenue, at 649 New York Avenue, NW. The 12,000 square foot club features exposed brick walls, 18-foot ceilings, candle-lit corners and dramatic lighting, marble bars, plasma screens, and state-of-the-art sound, combining to create the setting for sophisticated lounging and dancing. The main level is for dancing, the second floor offers VIP couch seating with table service and a private lounge, and the third floor features a small stage for live music and a second lounge with private bar. The three distinct club levels present a variety of musical styles, including hip-hop, house/techno, reggae, old school, 80s classics, jazz/blues, and international sounds. The dress code is fashionable, but “when in doubt, wear black.” Private events can accommodate up to 1,500. Doors open Fridays at 6 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays at 10 pm. While we were sorry to see the Shaw EcoVillage Project and Chain Reaction Youth Bike Shop, long fixtures at the northeast corner of 6th and R Streets, NW, move to the furthest reaches of Shaw at 1416 North Capitol Street, NW, we’re equally elated that DC GreenWorks, a nonprofit helping to re-tree DC who helped the community plant dozens of trees around Seaton Elementary School and French Street and 8th Street in recent years, will be taking up residence at SEV’s former quarters.  Having DC GreenWorks call Shaw home is a great opportunity.  The fact that SEV will continue to work with Shaw youth and undertake projects in central Shaw means they will continue to be an important partner in revitalization efforts.  DC GreenWorks moved to 1701 6th Street, NW in June 2005.  For more information, call 202-518-6195 or go to www.dcgreenworks.com.

Martin Garcia, president and CEO, has over 15 years experience organizing labor task forces, completing such major architectural and engineering projects as the PEPCO Building, The Victor Building, the Investment Building, the American Red Cross Building, and the US Botanical Conservatory. The Garcia team has the necessary licenses to handle carpentry, painting, plumbing, flooring, cabinetry, and drywall. For more information, call 202-518-2990 or visit www.punch-out-team.com.

Shaw finally has an independent coffee shop, one of the top three types of businesses neighborhood residents identified as priorities in surveys.  Azi's Café, at 1336 9th Street, NW, opened in April 2005 and instantly became a neighborhood center.  Open seven days a week, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Azi's (pronounced ah-ZEEs) is not only a great place to pick up some coffee, tea, or juice and a pastry, or a sandwich or salad at lunchtime or on your way home after work, but it's also a convenient place to pick up neighborhood papers like DC North, the Intowner, and Shaw Main Streets News.  You can also check your email or surf the web on your laptop using the café’s wireless hotspot, and beat the heat with specialty iced coffee drinks.  Neighbors are choosing Azi's Café as the place to meet before heading elsewhere, and as a destination.  It's a great place to sit and read a newspaper on a rainy Saturday morning, or for a small get together to welcome a new neighbor or celebrate a new job.  Azeb Desta, Azi's namesake and owner, is thrilled with the response to her new business.  The former Ritz Carlton food service manager pledges to continually refine her shop's offerings and encourages customers to ask for anything they don’t see on the menu.  Azi's aims to please, and they've already pleased hundreds of grateful members of the Shaw community.
