1000 Block of 7th Street, West Side - 1950: From the Wymer Photograph Collection, The Historical Society of Washington, DC/City Museum

Design Committee Accomplishments

In May 2005, the Design Committee completed a streetscape photographic survey, including photomontages for every block of Shaw Main Streets’ service area.  Each building is being individually photographed.  The digital images were combined to create a view of the entire block, and will later be available online.  The photomontages are a resource for the Design Committee in evaluating proposed façade improvements, building renovations, and new infill development along 7th and 9th Streets, NW.  They will also be used by the Economic Revitalization Committee to help attract new businesses to retail space that is available along Shaw’s historic commercial streets.  In May 2004, Design Committee co-chair Jackie Steward received an award from the Association for Preservation Technology, Washington, DC Chapter for her work in developing the Shaw Streetscape Photomontage Project.

The Design Committee conducted Shaw’s first ever community wide cleanup and greenup event on Saturday, April 16, 2005.  Entitled Keep Shaw Beautiful Day 2005, the kickoff for the event, held at the amphitheater in front of Shaw Junior High School, featured brief presentations by Mayor Anthony A. Williams and Ed Pinero, the White House’s Federal Environmental Executive.  Also present were executive from Keep American Beautiful, as the kickoff also served as the launch of the District’s observance of the annual Great American Cleanup. Both the DC Council and Mayor Williams proclaimed April 16th as “Keep Shaw Beautiful Day.”

The Shaw Junior High School Band performed at the kickoff and led dignitaries to the corner of 9th and R Streets, where five new Kanzan cherry trees were planted on the north side of the school.  Afterwards, volunteers moved throughout the neighborhood to collect trash, remove and pain over graffiti, plant flowering plants, and mulch treeboxes.  Over a dozen Shaw civic and business organizations collaborated on the cleanup, which is likely to become an annual event. Major sponsors of the event included American Honda Motor Company, Keep America Beautiful, Douglas Development, and Roadside Development.

The Design Committee sponsored a cherry tree planting event with the National Cherry Blossom Festival on March 30, 2004.  Three Yoshino cherry trees were planted on the east side of the Kennedy Recreation Center building at 1401 7th Street, NW.  The Shaw Junior High School Band marched the five blocks from the school to the playground, performing along the way and at the event, at which DC Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Barbara Lang spoke.  DC Green Works provided technical assistance on the planting to the Shaw Main Streets Design Committee, which also arranged the program. The Design Committee hopes to plant several cherry trees at Shaw Junior High School in March 2005 in conjunction with the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
