1000 Block of 7th Street, West Side - 1950: From the Wymer Photograph Collection, The Historical Society of Washington, DC/City Museum

DID YOU KNOW?

The O Street Market got its start when the Northern Liberty Market on Mount Vernon Square was demolished in 1872 and a new location for the vendors displaced from there was needed.  Sales stalls were constructed across the street from the O Street Market, on what is now the gymnasium of the Kennedy Recreation Center.  The O Street Market building was completed in 1881.

Economic Revitalization Committee

The Economic Revitalization Committee strengthens and broadens the economic base of the neighborhood business district by helping existing businesses expand and recruiting new ones to respond to the changing local market demand in a way that sharpens the competitiveness of the commercial district.

The mission of the SMS Economic Revitalization Committee is to provide resources and economic stimulus for present and future businesses in the Shaw commercial corridor.

Economic Revitalization Committee Goals for the next two years:

  1. Work to improve Shaw business retention and recruitment.
  2. Create a viable retail environment that expands the economic base of Shaw.
  3. Support mixed use development in Shaw.
  4. Attract increased consumer spending in the Shaw commercial corridor.
  5. Maximize internal and external investment in Shaw.
