Economic Revitalization Committee Accomplishments

The Economic Revitalization Committee presented two Small Business Development Workshops in conjunction with Georgetown University Law Center’s Harrison Institute for Public Law in 2004. An Advanced Small Business Workshop was held in Winter/Spring 2005.

Technical assistance has been provided through Manna Community Development Corporation to a number of current Shaw businesses, as well as entrepreneurs interested in starting businesses that will meet the needs identified by neighborhood residents as being priorities.

Business owners and entrepreneurs have also been referred to the Enhanced Business Information Center at the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Library for training in a variety of subjects, including doing business with the District government, becoming certified as a Local, Small, or Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (LSDBE), and renting and buying commercial property.

The ER Committee has also surveyed Shaw residents to determine which types of businesses the community is most interested in attracting. Among these business categories are hardware stores, sit down restaurants, coffee shops, book stores, and opticians. If you’d like to add your opinions to those of your neighbors, request a copy of the survey form by emailing info@shawmainstreets.com.

The ER Committee is continuing to gather information on existing neighborhood businesses in order to produce a Shaw Business Directory, to be published in 2005.
