Promotion Committee Accomplishments

The Promotion Committee has published six issues of Shaw Main Streets News, our quarterly newsletter, and distributed those newsletters to 3,000 neighborhood residents, as well as making the newsletter available online.

In October 2004, the Promotion Committee held a successful Taste of Shaw event highlighting the restaurants and bars on the 1900 block of 9^th Street, NW, that received coverage in the “Washington Post,” “DC North,” and on WAMU Radio. The participating venues report that they have seen many event attendees return to their establishments after Taste of Shaw to further sample their offerings.

In March 2005, the Promotion Committee launched the monthly Shaw Main Streets Night event series. Each month, a different business along the 7^th and 9^th Street corridors hosts an event where the products and services offered by the businesses are highlighted. The first two Shaw Main Streets Night events were a cheese and wine tasting at Modern Liquors and Ethiopian music and dance at Abiti Ethiopian Restaurant.

The Promotion Committee published a Shaw Historic Bike Tour brochure in June 2004 to encourage neighborhood residents and visitors alike to explore historic sites in the neighborhood associated with significant figures in local and national history. Copies of the brochure are available at businesses along 7^th and 9^th Streets, from the Chain Reaction Youth Bike Shop, and from Shaw Main Streets.

Shaw Main Streets’ email distribution list sends information on events and activities in our community several times per week. Hundreds of messages have been sent, generating visitors to cultural institutions and drawing customers to existing and new businesses, many of which were little known to even longtime residents.
