Peoples Drug Store No. 1, Southeast Corner of 7th Street and Massachusetts Avenue, NW, c. 1922: From the Library of Congress

DID YOU KNOW?
Early transportation routes in the city were created to move the flow of traffic, which was dominated by military transport of 250,000 troops in the 1860’s, from the Capitol to the Navy Yard in Georgetown. The areas located around the original stables develop the early commuter lines and grew to house the important shops during the entire streetcar era. Thus began the growth of Shaw as a commercial corridor.

Mission

Shaw Main Streets, Inc. (SMS) is a non-profit, community-based, organization that relies on the time, talent, and treasures of volunteers to implement the highly acclaimed Main Street Four Point Approach® (National Trust for Historic Preservation, National Main Street Center, www.mainstreet.org).

The MISSION of Shaw Main Streets is to preserve and restore the diverse, historic environment of Shaw's 7th and 9th Street commercial corridors, offering residents and visitors alike a better place to live, work, shop, play, and pray.

Shaw Main Streets will accomplish this mission in partnership with the community by achieving the following goals:

  • Support and strengthen existing businesses and recruit new businesses that meet the needs of the community.
  • Promote mixed-use development that integrates small local business development/revitalization with opportunities for local resident affordable housing.
  • Encourage responsible property revitalization and stewardship, including historic preservation.
  • Create a unique inner-city environment in Shaw serving as a destination point to attract visitors that subsidizes (adds value) to the local economy.
  • Promote a stable and safe environment in the Shaw commercial district.
  • Enhance access through improvements in transportation, parking, and other infrastructure.
  • Maximize stakeholder consultation/participation in commercial development and resident support of local businesses.
